Recreate the solar system right in your own living room or home library. Order planetary globes that are scaled to size and come in true-to-life colors. You can even make your own by using different sized balls. Place each planet according to their order and distances from the sun.
A three-dimensional solar system makes it easier to teach children the concepts of other planets, space and the universe. One creative way to help kids understand the size differences between planets is to relate them to familiar objects. For instance, Mercury – a marble, Venus – a walnut, Earth – golf ball, Earth’s moon – raisin, Mars – acorn, Jupiter – basketball, Saturn -soccer ball, Uranus – softball, Neptune – grapefruit, Pluto – bean.
