Mille Bornes

Monday, March 30th, 2009

In 1962, an auto racing card game was launched whose object is for each team of two players to be the first to complete a series of 1,000-mile trips. It was called Mille Bornes, the French word for milestones. Each player is given a hand of six cards and picks more in turn from a central pile. Cards called Distance, Hazard, Remedy, and Safety determine the course of play.

Earn mileage points, overcome traffic hazards and sabotage your opponents as you race cross-country through France. Once you have played 1,000 miles of cards, you win the game. The cards are poker-sized which can be played by 2 to 6 friends. Each set includes large and convenient score sheets and an easy-to-understand rules booklet.

Leapfrog Leapster

Thursday, March 19th, 2009

My son will soon be entering first grade and, like many parents out there. I do have my own fears and worries. Even if my son had already been through kindergarten and we bought him educational toys like the Leapfrog Leapster along with his books, I still think about how he would cope with full-time schooling.

But I sometimes think I shouldn’t worry too much. My son has this capacity to surprise me with things that I didn’t think he can understand at his young age. Just the other day, he explained to me how clouds release rain as we were driving home from my sister’s and it had started to rain. I don’t remember teaching him that, but I was truly astounded at how much he was learning. So perhaps I just have to take a deep breath and trust my son’s capabilities to learn and enjoy school.

Longboard trucks

Wednesday, March 11th, 2009

Longboarding is a fun type of sports for those who love skateboards. Longboard trucks are differential hardware that connects the wheels to the deck. They also act as the steering mechanism that helps the rider maneuver wherever he wants to go. As the rider controls the leaning from side to side, he can also control the direction of the board. These trucks are connected by hangers and polyurethane bushings that control the steering.

Trucks differ in many ways. The width of the hangers varies so as to accommodate the width of the longboard. They also differ in turning angles. A rider will develop his own riding styles and habits as he improves his skills. Eventually, he will find the right turning angle that corresponds to his own riding style.
