lighted roller skate wheels

Tuesday, December 30th, 2008

Even without roller skates, you can still enjoy moving around on wheels. That’s because there are Skater Buds or Skate Buds. These are lighted roller skate wheels that can be attached to the heel of your shoe for quick, smooth, and easy rolling. They work wonderfully on both asphalt and concrete and are effective for exercising too!

Skater Buds, however, are not for children younger than five years and people over 150 pounds. And unlike regular skates, they require balancing on one’s heels and keeping one foot in front of the other when in use. For maximum satisfaction and effectiveness, give this skating gear a go only with sport- or skate-type shoes that fit well and are fastened securely, and always with knee pads, elbow pads, wrist guards and a helmet. Stay away from wet surfaces as well, and from gravel, dirt, sand and debris to keep traction and brakes in optimum condition. Keep in mind that you must learn to skate correctly.

electronic games

Some kids are easily bored. They need more stimulation from electronic games than from traditional toys. Within reasonable limits, you can indulge your child’s craving for these kinds of games by giving him a handheld device he can play with. Now-a-days, a lot of electronic games abound so it’s not difficult to choose.

As much as possible, select games that feature brain teasers, math games, puzzles ,and trivia instead of games with violent images. Subjects in school take on new meanings when placed inside a game. Like traditional toys, electronic games can also be used as learning tools to stimulate a child’s brain functions. Just make sure that he knows there will be time limits imposed to playing so he can have time for other things.

corn hole

Tuesday, December 23rd, 2008

One of the outdoor activities that can be enjoyed by the whole family is playing the corn hole game. A lot of people call it the bean bag toss or the bean bag game. Luckily, playing the game is quite easy and not physically challenging and stressful at all. Because of these advantages, a person who wants to play the game can actually learn it fast.

Everyone can play the corn hole game, from very young children to the elderly ones. In starting the game, players will toss soft cloth bags full of dried corn, dried beans or plastic pellets, at a hole in the board. These bags are valued with points in the event that they go through the hole, and are worth lesser points if they land on the board and stay there. Bags that drops off the board or do not hit the board at all are not worth any points. These bags are lightweight, soft and are easy to toss, suitable for those who are not physically strong. The board is not heavy as well, and there’s a little smaller version available which can fit in the trunk of a car.

toy chest

Tuesday, December 23rd, 2008

I used to have a hard time teaching my kids to pick up their toys when they were done playing. Then I asked other mothers at the kindergarten for their tips and tricks. Let me share some of them:

1. Invest in a toy chest that has their favorite characters on them. They will be more interested in putting their toys in their proper places. 2. Make it a game. Play some music and tell them that after the song is done, the toys have to be in the toy box. 3. Give them a reward. Let them choose what kind of dessert they want if everything is left spic and span in the playroom. 4. Take out only a few toys at a time. Don’t let them pour out all the contents of the play box. Let them choose only 2 or 3 toys at a time. 5. Let them watch educational videos or read books on the topic. There are many videos and books that tell about why it is important to clean up your toys.

Navy model planes

Friday, December 19th, 2008

I was stationed in Hawaii with the US Navy for several years. Those were what I would consider my glory days. I learned a lot of life lessons while I was with the military. One of them was discipline. I think a lot of young men and women today would benefit from a little disciplinary training from the military. A lot of them do not know the meaning of respect and hard work.

I loved the brotherhood and camaraderie that developed between me and the rest of the crew while I was in Hawaii. We really became a model troop because of teamwork. We usually hold reunions about this time of the year, and I was very happy to go, and we all got Navy model planes as giveaways. That is one of the best ideas they had in years!

Diecast Bel Air

Friday, December 19th, 2008

Diecast vehicles are pretty reasonably priced in stores, and for some of the older ones that are familiar. These days, there are lots of different manufacturers that make diecast vehicles of all kinds. There are construction vehicles, cars, airplanes, military vehicles, boats, and more. When starting a collection of diecast vehicles, you must first decide which type you really want because there are so many to choose from. You can collect a certain model and make of car, such as a Chevrolet Nova, a Diecast Bel Air, or you may opt to just collect various yellow diecast construction vehicles, the choice is totally up to you.

Once you start building up your diecast collection, Too you should also consider getting a display case to show it off.

remote hobby toys

Wednesday, December 17th, 2008

I grew up playing with toy trains, so much so that I wanted to become a train engineer. Well, as things turned out, I got into a stereotypical boring job as an accountant. I also wanted to have a big family when I grow up. Now that wish was granted, because I am now the proud stepdad of three little boys.

Things were pretty awkward with them at first. Then I decided I had to make an effort to reach out to them. I did it the best way I knew how: by playing with them. I remembered the many happy days I spent with my toy trains and I decided to look for similar toys. I found so many remote hobby toys online that it blew my mind! Now I am happy to report that we spend most our free time together, playing with toy cars, trucks, and planes.
