So you collect stuffed animals. Maybe you have a few dozen teddy bears and a few dozen more of other stuffed animals. You know how easily they collect dust. The fact that little girls and boys love to hug them makes you cringe at the possibility of their contracting illness from foreign bodies that live under the thick cuddly fur. Stuffed toys need to be cleaned and there is more than one way to do it.

Your best bet will be to bring it to the drycleaners. Yes, that can be expensive and not too practical if you have dozens of them. So learn how to do it yourself and save a few bucks. Here are some sound steps to do it yourself:

~Take the bow off if possible because the color may run. If the bow doesn’t come off, wet it a bit then squeeze the water out on a light surface and see if there is any color in the water.
~Hand wash the bear in the bathtub or put it in a pillowcase then on the gentle cycle in the washing machine.
~Hang it or use the coolest setting on the dryer. High heat may melt the fur and it will not look fluffy anymore.
~Brush the fur with a comb to fluff it back up again.

Christmas season is here. If you are still looking to get a gift for a child, go with the classic gift, the teddy bear. Everybody will appreciate the teddy bear. It doesn’t matter how many bears they have at home, people still appreciate it. It’s hard to think that the teddy bear came from the mercy killing of an injured baby bear.

Teddy bears trace their roots to one of the great American presidents, Theodore Roosevelt. He is responsible for giving the teddy bear its name. Back in November 1902 Roosevelt was bear hunting. In that expedition he came across an injured baby bear. He ordered the mercy killing of the bear. Soon after that hunting expedition, an editorial was made depicting him with a bear. Within a year of this drawing, the teddy bear was born. Soon afterwards teddy bears became commonplace in homes and popular as gifts.

Nobody can deny the popularity of teddy bears among children. But they have an affinity for frogs as well. Didn’t they fall in love with Kermit the frog with the iconic look and voice that was recognizable worldwide? Didn’t they memorize his song “The Rainbow Connection”, sang it and danced to it as often as they could? Come to think of it, Kermit was best friends with Fozzie Bear, another iconic character.

Gund has its own version of the plush frog. They may not be as intelligent as Kermit but they have their own cute tricks down their (invisible sleeves). Take for example this Gund prince kiss-a-lot frog that makes a kissing sound when you push his chest. Other manufacturers have their own version of the cute hopping toys. Flopsie is a bean filled frog. You will want to have more than one. They have adoption papers when they come into your life.

The teddy bear, with its chubby body and outstretched arms has been a symbol of comfort for kids. Physically, they are easy to hug. They seem to hug back. The color is nothing fancy. Brown, the color of earth was the original color of teddy bears. Of course, they have come up with fancy ones.

Teddy bears have entertained children for years. The image of a child pulling a bear with one hand while the other hand hold’s on to a parent’s hand has become a universal representation of love and dependence. But modern society will not leave it at that. They have found other uses of the teddy bear. Just like memory bears made from personal things of a departed beloved or a microwavable teddy bear that comforts a bothered child on a chilly night.

Christmas time is near. It’s the season of giving and of children. I love going to the toy stores and looking at teddy bears. They are my kid’s all time favorite toy. It’s the first toy that he showed interest in as an infant. It is also the toy that he carries around everywhere.

Every time I bring my son to the toy store, he would go straight to the stuff toy section. He would play with the different teddy bears giving all of them the same name, Teddy. Other stuff animals he would name by the sound they make. A cat would be Meow and a lion would be called Roar. When it’s time for him to eat he would bring baby Teddy and would feed him himself.
