For some people whenever they are asked to name a popular ship. They can only name one - the Titanic. It helps that the movie on the “Titanic” was a mega hit. There are actually plenty of other ships that are almost the same as if not bigger than the titanic. The Queen Elizabeth II and the Queen Mary are both huge ships. However after a recent visit to the museum I learned about another big ship which was considered one of the finest. The Normandie was a French ship that was captured by the US and later sank. There as a Normandie model ship available at the store near the museum.

The Normandie was famous for its scientific engineering and design. It was also known for its fantastic French cuisine. Some of the world’s eminent chefs worked aboard the Normandie. Most of the male relatives on my mom side are navy men. They did tours in Japan and Hawaii. They loved it so much that even after they retired, my cousins would sail every chance they get. One cousin actually started collecting model ships. He has a model sailboat, an ocean liner, an aircraft carrier and a Titanic model.

I think every boat collector has a Titanic model. It’s a piece of history, a tragic event that happened many years ago but is still talked about until today. I don’t think you can be a true collector without it. It’s like saying you collect basketball cards and you don’t have Michael Jordan. I, on the other hand, prefer to have a model sailboat. It’s simple, elegant and doesn’t look spooky at night.

I love to watch movies based on true events. One of the movies I love watching is the Titanic movie by James Cameron. The computer generated Titanic model ship they made really looked authentic. The story of the Titanic is really fascinating. A state of art ship (at that time) would which they thought was unsinkable actually sank!

After watching the movie, I decided to buy a 40 inch Titanic model ship. What I love about this model is it came with LED lights. I displayed it proudly in the mantel of our fireplace. There is something historical about the Titanic and I felt that by buying a Titanic model ship, I was keeping a part of history. My kids love it but are not allowed to play with it. Someday I will tell them the story of the Titanic, or I could just let them watch the movie.

When buying collector’s models, always be attentive to details. Mint condition model space ship means that it is in perfect condition. Even the box should be as you would have bought it from the store. No smudges, the printing is clear and there are no tapes. The value of a mint condition never opened piece is so much higher that the value of a mint condition opened piece.

Some model kits are sold started but not finished. The one selling it must have decided that putting together a model toy is not for him. He must have found following instructions too tedious. The cutting and gluing must have gotten to him. He probably thought it was better to sell it through eBay to get part of his money back.

The Cutty Sark is one of the most famous ships of the 19th century. Built in 1869, she gave long illustrious years of service, having at least three home ports. Cutty Sark made her mark as a merchant ship, delivering tea from China. When she was taken out of commission in 1954, she was then preserved and turned into a museum.

Her fine structure has inspired the creation of Cutty Sark ship model. She epitomized the age of great sail and is the only known extreme clipper that still exists.
