I still remember my first dollhouse. I got it as a Christmas gift when I was 8 years old. It was the best gift ever. It even included a play dollhouse table and chairs. I remember playing with this dollhouse everyday. I created these scenes wherein my dolls would be having tea parties. The table and chairs came in so handy. The detail of the table and chairs were so realistic, you can’t help but think that it was the real thing.

It actually was the real thing, only it was miniature in size. This was the best thing about playing with dollhouses. You actually mimic what you can do in real life. I reflect back to what I did when I was playing with my dollhouse. And you know what, I’m actually doing the same things for real today. When I have visitors over, I play host and do the same things when I was hosting my imaginary tea parties when I was a kid. Life is really funny sometimes.

I had a conversation with my best friend once and she voiced out her concern about her daughter who wouldn’t play with her dolls. Rather, her daughter would play with her elder brother’s toys. I smiled and, though I am no expert on child psychology or the like, I gave her a suggestion. You see, dolls are not just toys to cuddle or dress up. Dolls are there to serve as means to practice creativity. It helps develop the ability of a child to imagine stories which involve conflict and resolution which, in turn, practices their decision-making and develops their concept of good and bad. It can also help parents know how their child thinks through projection and role-playing. Aside from this, it helps a child develop her social skills from solitary to associative play.

So, I told my best friend that it would be best to play with the dolls herself together with her daughter. She can pretend to be one of the dolls and, hopefully, her daughter would catch on. Not only would this help with her daughter’s development, it also allows them mother-daughter bonding time. Now, my best friend even bought a dollhouse accessorized with wooden doll furniture for her daughter. She is now teaching her daughter the importance of family and home and the responsibilities of the different members of the household. Dolls have brought them closer than ever.

My daughter spends hours playing with her dolls. She moves her doll house furniture around. Her doll’s living room set consisting of a sofa and two side chairs are placed in one corner of the living room. She lets her dolls sit for a while and then she brings to the kitchen where they cook a meal using her tiny cooking pots and pans. They have lunch on the dining table with toy plates filled with plastic pasta.
